We are going back in Febuary next year and August with the rest of our family the rooms were very clean and nice with great views. Hotel staff very friendly, entertainment was good, the noise from the centre below did go on a bit, but as the bedroom was at the back of the apartment it didn't bother us. Only problem was all the steps but taxis cheap enough 2 eurors usually. Best places to eat would recommend San Miguels had to queue some nights but worth it. About 30 to 35 eurors for 4 of us with drinks, Catarmaran trip is worth it all food and as much as you can drink included in price. Great hotel - planning our trip for next year now. Manuel and Mr Burns were great on receptioon and behind the Bar - couldn't do enough and very funny. Only issue was Dave the entertainer - he needs to get back into this country as the heat is getting to him - he believes that Middlesborough are a top club. A bit too many steps for our liking, to get to the town, but taxi's only 2 euros back up. Entertainment in the evening was great, kids dancing, bingo followed by the acts. The apartments were very clean and the cleaners were in everyday. On arrival the Cala D'or was impressive in its location, appearance and its cleanliness which was a super start. A very warm welcome was given by the reception staff that also opened up the shop for us at 1.30 am for milk! The views from my balcony which was a good size were fantastic overlooking the pool with the harbor in view. I found all staff to be very polite and helpful in the reception and bar area. Entertainment was good, they have some very good acts on to suit all tastes. I most highly recommend the Cala D'or and will be going back later this year simply because my family and I had such a brilliant time as did all other holiday makers we were there with !! Rooms are clean and tidy. But little noise insulation. If you get one of the lower levels. Bring plenty of cat food. The feral cats are so tame that they try and get into your room. We didn't watch the entertainment but it sounded pretty annoying from our balcony, but cant really fairly comment. The hotel was clean apart from one attack by a cockroach on the last night, but he regretted it more than we did. The staff all seemed friendly. We had a self catering apartment on the 4h floor, though this was a plus - could get the lift so no stairs but also there was no way anyone could get on our balcony from outside so we felt safe to leave the doors open at night. Overall would recommend the Cala Dor it deserves a higher rating just because of the standards of the rooms. Didnt try the bar food so cant comment, shop is expensive but theres a supermarket down the hill so walk there if you want more than milk. Just spent a week at these apartments. Apartments excellent, very clean, small but there was only the two of us so the space was adequate. We were in Apartment 317B. We arrived on the Monday and everything was fine until Saturday evening, left the apartment about 1930hrs to go for dinner (San Miguels.. absolutely brill) came back about 2300hrs and the apartment had been broken into. They had come in through the bedroom window and removed the SAFE from the wardrobe containing passports, cash, credit cards, camera and mobile phone. We reported this to reception staff and to the Thomsons rep who contacted the local police, who later attended, had a look around and then told us we would have to report the matter the next day at the Guardia Civil in the next resort. In order for us to do this (bearing in mind we do not speak spanish) we had to hire a translator to take us there, complete the report and ensure we had the correct documents to enable us to get on the flight home and back into the UK. The whole feel of the place is excellent and it was great to see it was very busy for the week as we had been told the resort was quiet in previous weeks. I think that for Dave ( that well known entertainer from Middlesbrough) it was a welcome sight to see so many people. In the resort itself we found the authorities were clamping down on late night noise and had closed down some of the more popular dance bars but here are still plenty of bars and restuarants to visit. The appt was clean and comfy, the bathroom was a good size with a good shower. The bedroom was ok not enougth wardrobe space for all our stuff. The kitchen was fine didn't cook in it but was well equipped and clean. Sitting area was fine the seating made into 2 beds and were comfy big enougth for adults, watch the step down! Food served from the bar area was very good - and very good value for money we ate there regularly. We tried lots of these but our favourite was an italian resturant called Pinocchio's. Dave makes all the children feel welcome and remembers all their names which is nice, this is followed by bingo & then a different act on nightly (except Monday's) such as singers, magic acts a juggling act etc. The entertainment is finished by midnight, but the bar remains open till 1am. Only gripe on the bar is that the drinks are quite expensive (3.65Euro for a pint of carling) During the daytime Dave also does killer pool (for adults & kids) and also water-polo. Regards getting a sunbed - you do have to be an early bird, one guy we actually saw putting towels on at 2am!!! But the security guard took them off again, but by 9am almost all beds had been reserved! Yes, there is almost 200 steps down to the main centre! But honestly you do get used to it and as previous reviews have said just get a taxi back up for a couple of Euro if you dont fancy the walk, the taxis are plentiful so you wont be waiting around for ages for one. it is quite daunting on your first walk through the commercial centre as every resturant/bar as someone outside practically dragging you in! The best places to eat we found were Churchills, Las Vegas, the Indian resturant next to Las Vegas (forgot the name!)Si senor chinise buffet was great value too these are all on the upper level. On the lower level Bubbles and San Miguels are nice too, thats if you can get into san Miguels though as there is always a queue. We had some fantastic weather whilst we were there and the heat in the rooms at the apartments honestly became unbearable some nights. One thing I cant believe no one as mentioned in the past reviews is the noise you hear from the bars in the commercial centre at night. it is impossible to leave your balcony door open to let any air in as the noise goes on till 4am. To be fair our children will sleep through any amount of noise so it did not affect them but if you are a light sleeper then it'd be a problem. Also cheapest supermarket is the Herdisa - again turn righ at the bottom of the steps & you'll see it. Enjoy your stay! ;-) The entertainment was terrific, a show six nights a week, we never laughed so much, if your like me and love to have a good time, well get up and sing a song on Karaoke nite on sats Apartments good location about 200 steps down to the resort centre, so not to bad to climb back up, but in lazy / hungover moments taxi back up was only 2 euros. Had been to Puerto Rico previously and had close to 600 steps to get anywhere so staying here was bound to be an improvement. Visit to Linikers bar is a must while staying at Puerto Rico especially if there is any football on!!!!! Best atmosphere ever!!!!! The apts are of a better standard than normal very clean and efficient maids and reception staff. Only gripes are apt bar a bit expensive and sun loungers are not that comfy.. The resort itself is full of bars restaurants (san miguels restaurant a must) and the beaches are great !!! we tried acouple of resteraunts but always went back to SAN MIGUELS not sure about the spelling but the food and the prices were the best to be found and the service was great. Souix city is a great night out but I wouldnt advise going on the camels as it seems such a waste of money. As for eating out we found Murphys Kitchen to be the best for breakfast, Las Farolas does good steaks and Al Ponte is an excellent pizza restaurant. We would definately go back and stay there again. First time to Puerto Rico and the Cala D'or apartments. Nice clean apartments, kitchens well equipped. Saw NO cockroaches in our block (A). Saw some in the resort, but not too many. Bar prices high - 4 euros for a Bacardi and coke! (bought a bottle of 'white rum' in the Supermarket for 4 euros). Bingo at 10pm, good for a laugh. Then singer/magician etc on 11 - 12. All entertainment can be heard very loud and clear from apartments!! If you have a night flight home, make sure you book a late stay room BEFORE you leave the UK, we didn't and had to vacate room at 10am - cleaners came at 10.02am!! Although the late stay rooms are 36 euros and you get them until 5pm only. Cleaners washed all dishes - which was a bit of a bonus! Microwaves in kitchen. Small balcony with views over Puerto Rico shopping centre & the sea and harbour, thank goodness for triple glazing, you could hear the music quite clearly when the patio doors were open. 188 steps down to restaurants/shopping centre, we used to get a taxi back up for 1.90 euros, although we came back 2nd May and the prices seem to have gone up to 2 euros 40 cent in the month of May, but still reasonable with 4 of us! Heated private pool, which is situation near the beach, was lovely. Paid for breakfast, which was really nice, cold buffet and full English then 'swim' included. Jacuzzi is recommended! The German Supermarket is the cheapest for food, water, booze etc. Netto's and Spar were slightly more expensive. Drinks in restaurant were pricey - approx. 2.40 euros for a pint (whether it was larger or coke) half a pint was 1.40 euros. It was friendly and we felt safe within the complex. We never saw any cockroaches during our stay. We hired a car which was excellent for seeing more of the island . Most of the bars and resturants are down the steps to the commercial centre were you will meet all sorts of pr type people trying to get you into their respective bars, but after a while they will get to know your face and leave you alone.go to Murphys Kitchen for your breckfast (only 3.50 euros)and the biggest steaks you will ever see.It is by far the best in Puerto Rico ,around the corner from there is M&Ns were you can get a pint for 90 cents and bottles of bud ,brezers etc for a euro.Entertainment at the apartmens is aimed at the kids and consists of killer pool, kids party at 21.00 , then a singer or comidian, until midnight, bar closes at 01.00.Dave sorts all the entertainment out is is great with the kids,he even manages to remember all their names whilst trying to get them all involved.Prices at the bar are 2.50 euros for a pint and 1.90 euros for a coke ,food is o.k but i did see someone take chicken back to the kitchen. We went to Amerderes beach which is a 3.50euro taxi ride away i recommend it to anyone who likes the beach,it is beautiful, golden sands and clear waters. We also visited souix city which is a must, well worth the money great show to watch and a lovely bar b q. We are planning to book to go next year thats how much we loved it, I would recommend it to anyone. i must agree with everyone befroe me great great place second stay here and still no faults puerto rico is a great place- reception staff great especially jack a bit of a characvter bar staff brill although do go missing at times haha appts very clean.resort excellent .well worth a visit.excursions superb but a bit over priced.plenty of things to do in puerto rico, nightlife great.try to go to garbos during your stay, excellent dinner show for all the family, you will not be dissappointed. Just got back from our second visit to these apartments and again really enjoyed our weeks holiday. Peurto Rico is not for less mobile people but these apartments are situated just up hill from the main centre of the resort. There are approx 200 steps down to the bars and shops but for getting back there are loads of taxis at a cost of approx 2 euro's. The onsite bar stays open to 1.00pm and Carlos and Chinno always have a warm welcome and can be great fun if you give them time to get to know you. The complex has a daily entertainment programme led by Middlesbrough Dave , he trys really hard to get people involved and is great with the kids , some of the shows are ok but not spectacular. The apartments themselves are ideal , very clean and well looked after. All of the other staff are excellent. We had a briiliant holiday the apartments were really nice and clean the pool was a little small but apart from that you could not fault the cala dor.there is plenty to do in puerto rico once you've got down the many steps but we found you dont feel the pain comming back up the steps if your drunk! We went to a very friendly bar called Buddys the people that owned it were very nice and the beer was very cheap.they had karaoke on most nights which if your in a group is a right laugh. There were plenty of lovely places to eat and all at reasonable prices we ate out every night and never had a bad meal. All in all it was a brilliant holiday the cala dor is well worth a visit and the peolpe in the hotel and out and about were very friendly. The Steps dont read to much into these if you dont want to walk back just get a cheap taxi back up (E2.40) where its flat and theres no problem. Go to pr have a gr8 time. Have just returned back having spent a week in the Cala D'Or Apts in Puerto Rico. The accomodation is clean, tidy and well equipped, the rooms are a good size with super views towards the harbour. We only had a snack one day which was well presented and reasonably priced. If you walk down the steps into the shopping centre you will find food to suit all tastes. There is some excellent places to eat and its all reasonably priced. The only downside is the 180+ steps down the hill. Climbing back up can be rather difficult when the weather is hot but there are always plenty of taxis which cost approx 2 euro to the apartments. Also worth visiting Mogan whilst your there which is a pleasant boat trip from the harbour. Another tip - go to la bolera restaurant which is not in the centre commerical but near the mini golf. Its by far the nicest place we ate and not expensive. Theres two mini golfs, the one by this restaurant is really good though busy in the eve, the other one looked rubbish and we never saw anyone in there. As for the apartments we were pleasantly surprised. Clean and spacious but dont go if u like to stay by the pool as its small. Hotel staff were nice no complaints, didnt try the bar food so cant comment. Evening entertainment could be heard from our room with an annoying man but he shut up by midnight. Noise from centre commerical can be heard but wasnt an issue. View from apartment is just of the resort good for people watching but not pretty. Id recomend the cala dor if u want somewhere just to sleep/ use as a base as standard of rooms was really excellent. Did have one cockroach incident but was soon sorted thanks to my boyfriend and a hard soled shoe! Hotel was 180 steps to the town (kids counted) we walked down and got a taxi back up costing only 2 euros. Best restaurant was Las Vegas the steaks were out of this world and the all you can eat Chinese buffets were also worth it. We went on two trips The Priate Ship was excellent brilliant day out for the kids they were enteertained all day with games and prizes. Sioux City was brilliant as well . Rooms were very clean and towels and sheet changed 3 times a week. Pool very clean and bar and restaurant were brilliant. All the staff were lovely and friendly and WE WILL BE BACK. Hotel was comfortable with everything you needed (especially with a little un around),Good atmosphere all round as Dave, the inhouse entertainer, broke the ice for everyone to get on well. The kids love that guy as he is just fantastic. We didnt hardly leave cala d'or as every night was a right laugh. Quite a few steps down to town but walked down and got cabs back as dirt cheap. We didnt hardly leave cala d'or as every night was a right laugh. Quite a few steps down to town but walked down and got cabs back as dirt cheap. If you fancy a good meal and like italian then restaurant CLAN above shops near farmacy along the beach is a must. watch out for the african ladies trying to tie bracelets on your wrist as they are very intimidating indeed. me and daughter got our hair braided by the funky fairies in the hotel and recommend them even though dearer than centre as do a good job and it lasted. We even got a freebie t-shirt from them!! ladies out there with piercings then check them out for that too. Overall a wicked time had by all and we wont talk about the hangover after the barbecue on tuesday night . I stayed in the Cala D'OR appartments in July 2005 and i have to say it was the best holiday i have ever been on!! i'm already planning my holiday for next year to the same apartments as we couldnt fault them. I travelled with my boyfriend and six other members of his family and all fo us enjoyed it. It was the second time i had been to Gran Canaria and it was definately better than the first. The apartments and great, really clean, maid service every day (she even washed the dished which we were impressed with) our apartment had a great view of the pool and you could also see the beach. there was a couple of hundred steps down to The Commercial Centre. I have to admit if you like lively then this is the place to be. There are lots of bars and restaurants there. Some bars to mention which we enjoyed:
There is a great restaurant in the commercial centre also called Las Vegas Steak House. The food was absolutely lovely and the portions were out of this world. Well worth the money! The T-bone steak was the biggest I have ever seen and under that was another piece of steak. There is a couple of Chinese buffets and also a few English pubs serving English food in the commercial centre. At the top of the hill is the Europa Centre. This centre is more for families. There is a few English and irish bars here with karaoke and other great turns. One bar to mention is Barbacoa which has a turn on ever night and there is also a cocktail bar downstairs im not sure of the name but you get huge cocktails for only a couple of pounds which is quite good and the staff were really friendly. Taxis only cost a couple of euros to take you up and down the hill which is easier than the stairs. I wouldn't recommend McDonalds. Its not the same as back home, in fact it was vile!! There is a great crazy golf course in the Europa Centre which is really fun. We went to the water park in Maspalomas. Word of warning, the reps try to get you to take a trip there and it costs a fortune. You are better getting the bus or a taxi there as it costs you a lot less. There was a few power cuts on some of the slides when we were there but apart from that we had a great day. There is a market is Port Morgan which is a good day out. The place is beautiful, it is a little fishing village and I think the market is on a Monday. You can get a boat there from the beach in Puerto Rico for a couple of euros. If you feel adventurous you could try The Big Red which we did and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a speed boat which is on the beach of Puerto Rico. It costs about £15 and takes you out for about 30 minutes, hitting the waves and getting you soaked right through which was fun! When staying at the Cala D'Or I have to mention the entertainment. There is a man called Dave who is there everyday providing entertainment and its not just for the kids. He plays killer pool and water polo etc then he comes back on an evening and does a disco for the kids and there is bands on every night. I have to recommend the hypnotist night, that was a good laugh for all the family! Like I say I am already looking to book up for these same apartments next year as I no wouldn't stay anywhere else. I would recommend anyone to go, Puerto Rico is a great place for families, couples and for young people to go, not only do you get the heat all year round but the nightlife and restaurants are fab too. Like most people we walked down and taxied home like at 2euro I think most people did the same.Taxi rank right ouside the huge shopping mall which houses all the shops bars clubs and eating houses. Everyone was so frindly that it just made a PERFECT holiday. If like us you have children with you and need to do some cooking in the apartments I suggest that you use the German suppermaket where stuff is a lot lot cheaper with a 2 litre bottle of coke costing only 1.29 euro compare that with the other supermarkets and esecilly the one in the apartments. What I did was get up in the cool of the morn and walk down to the supermarket and taxi it back :) It probbaly easier to find if you get to the bottom of the steps and turn right cross the road walk up to what seems to be the end of the shops and you will see on your left hand side a few steps up and that will lead you right to it then back to the taxi rank in about 3 mins and its all done before the REAL heat starts. When we was there the heat got really unbearable from around 12 lunchtime so be sure to cover up well as my 15 year old thought one day that it was cloudy it would be a good idea to wear a factor 8 (not a good choice) Bar staff and hotel staff in genearl were all so friendly doing all they could to make your stay the best. I never heard noise at night (thats not to say there was none as I dont sleep I just DIE . But I am lead to believe that if there is noise it is sorted by mangament as they dont take kindly to it.Nothing seems to be a prob to them at all no matter what you need just ask ..like extra pillows just ask. Now I guess that just leaves DAVE the wonderful the GREAT...Aamzing man thats on the go from around 11am to 2 or 3pm playing water polo and killer pool ( But for God sake take him some chalk as he keeps lossing it) ...PS Dave thanks for sending me the DVD as promised now I have watched what I did get up to when I was Hypnotised. If you are up for a laff this is one night you HAVE to take part in as you will feel so relaxed you will think you have had a nights sleep. The pool is cleaned every morning and all surnding areas are washed and polished never been to a cleaner place. No matter what age you are or what kind of group you go in I am sure you will find it a wonderful place to stay!!! Having never been to Gran Canaria, all I knew was that the weather was good so I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the location was, how friendly everyone was and how clean the hotel was. On our first day we used the hotel pool and travelled down the many steps to the shops and many many restaurants to find our feet. At this point we were unaware of the fantastic facilities the hotel had to offer! By Day 3 we found out about the in-house entertainment and that's when we met DJ Dave, our resident Cala D'or Hotel Entertainer - he was fantastic. He made the whole holiday wonderful! During the day there were events for all ages such as Killer Pool which attracted high competitive levels amongst the lads mainly, not that Dave didn't encourage the girls. Then there was the Water Polo, a girls vs boys team event - it was hilarious watching the rules change each day and even my husband, Richie as he was named by Dave, joined in and became nicknamed as "shoulders"! On to the hotel staff, they were always friendly and helpful. Especially Anna, who within a few days also got to know your likes and dislikes. She always had a smile and was an asset to the hotel. If I had to pick a down side, it was the many steps down to the main shopping complex - 177 we were told by Emily, Amy, Jack and Evie, a lovely group of children from Middlesborough. However, at 2 euros for a taxi back, the journey down was quite easy. There were lots of places to eat in the shopping complex from traditional English food to Chinese, Indian and plenty of local dishes - the average cost for our family of three was 40 euros, this was with drinks too (alcoholic of course). I really didn't expect to have been so well looked after during our stay at the Cala D'or, thinking that we would choose to be off out EVERY day. Not the case, Dave was a fantastic asset to the hotel and absolutely made our holiday - I really didn't want to come home and am already planning a return visit. Puerto rico in its self is also very nice, there are around 180 steps down to the commercial center where the main nightlife is....i managed walking up for the first few nights, then had to end up getting taxis for the remainder of the holiday....(probably something to do with the alcohol) one thing to watch out for, is the night time security guard, quite miserable, and really isnt impressed with us jumping in the pool fully clothed at 5am! dont say you havnt been warned!!!! generally, an all round holiday, best bars....snoopies, bora bora, harleys, and the garage. best restaurants: pinocio's, and san miguells, get there early tho, as theres always a que.... Ive just returned from 1 week in the Cala D'or and i would definatly go back. the hotel was immaculate, didnt see 1 cock roach which i was worrying about abit! Nice big rooms, maid service 5 days we were there, even do your washing up for you which is a nice surprise on your return from the beach! beach is really nice, we hired 2 loungers and a brolley for the whole day for 5 euro's. The hotel again was lovely, Dave the kids entertainer was great, the pool is actually bigger than it looks and the kids pool is seperated from the big pool which is great as out little one is only 4. Loads of steps to the "main shopping" area, but we got a taxi back up to save the trek and never paid no more than 2 euro's! Couple of lovely restaurants that we kept going to all the time,La cabina was great for steak and San Miguels did very nice fish, both reasonable prices. Only thing that was a pain was the guys outside the bars & restaurants trying to get you to eat there, we just said we'd already eaten, but i suppose you get that wherever you go. I would definatly go back to Peurto Rico and stay at the Cala D'or again. the commercial centre is where the action is on an evening the restaurants are okay but if you want a good dinner head to amorodes beach(sorry for the spelling!)as the reastaurants are fab!the bars at the commercial centre are fab!harleys bar is really good with the waiters that dance on the tables and every monday night they have strippers, also linekers is a laugh and covent garden!!! all in all we had the best time ever and are going back this august, and if we could get booked at the cala dor we would stay again!!! The apartments were very clean and well equipped. A lot of steps down to the resort centre but will keep you fit. Evening entertainment at the apartments most nights was of a very good standard. Would go back to these apartments if Dave was still there as entertainer. The commercial centre in the town has something to cater for all ages. Some fabulous restaurants - Mama Pinos was our favourite here - and some cheap bars - M&M's and Rumours are worth a visit. If you want to walk a little further there is another shopping centre to the left of the harbour, through the tunnel, here we ate at Palacio Imperial - a great Chinese and La Gaitero which did great meat dishes. It is not a place for anyone with walking difficulties because of the steps or slopes down to town but a taxi will only cost 2 euros back to the Cala D'Or. If you are going soon take some chalk for Dave for the pool table, he's always on the scrounge for some and will appreciate it and you can ask for an extra life at Killer Pool. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Cala D'Or I would not hesitate to go again. Our daughter fell in love with Dave the entertainer (Hi Dave from Riley) Our only complaint was the 2 barmaids who have a habit of asking peoples husbands to go down the town with them for late night drinks a bit too sociable girls. We found the Cala Dor appartments very nice and clean, with very good maid service. Could have done with a lift from the entrance to the reception floor, like the cala nova, not some thing you want to do is carry cases up stairs as soon as you arrive. We found the appartments very noisy in the night, especially if you are near the lift. You hear every one arriving in the night, and all the people coming in after a night out, and we wernt getting in till 1 ish .The walls seem to be very thin. Puerto Rico not too bad we just got taxis back on a night (after a very heavy night out!)but during the day the walk up and down was fine. Great snack bar, nice staff. The resort itself is brilliant we said we will definately return again. The restaurants are lovely we never had a bad meal for the full two weeks. We found bar la fiesta excellent - nightly entertainment on and the staff are a hoot! The hotel is on a steep hillside, as are most of Puerto Rico hotels as it is a steep sided valley and it is a walk up some steps to get to it (or taxi) but never took us more than a few minutes to reach and i though it was nowhere near as bad a climb as other reviews said. The hotel is 5 mins from the shops and 10 mins from the beach INCLUDING the steps. Noise does carry from the comercial centre but again that has to effect every hotel in the area. The pool is small and the poolside slippery, be warned and tell your kids not to run, shame as this is the Cala Novas only downside in my opinion. The hotel bar sanacks and breakfasts are good but beers a bit pricy. A couple of tips, if you eat at the commercial centre use the ground level resteurants as their better. we ate at El Valeros almost every night. Avoid the reps tours. You can easily walk to the water park in Puerto Rico, its a bit smaller but so much less hassle to get to than the reps tour to masaplomas. Dolphin spotting trips, go to the harbour and arrange your own, some even give you another trip free if you come up bare, you will save a fortune!. all in all great holiday in great location as views are great from the balconys, not to many steps to climb as long as you are fairly fit ( although I consider myself unfit ) they should not be a problem. There are loads of restaurants to choose from in the centre but you do get hassled. Recommend going to Covent Garden bar which is next to Harleys. Harleys is good aswell but the chairs are much more comortable in Covent Garden bar and cocktails are better. Drinks are very expensive and most bars say that you are getting two drinks as it is 'Happy Hour' but you are paying for 2 drinks. Recommend getting the ferry over to Mogan on a Friday for the market but the market does get very packed. All in all a very nice holiday and would recommend these apartments as they are ideal. Try San Miguels (in the Europa Centre) for a meal. Phil's Top Tip: Go to 'Playa Del Ingles' - |
